A custom engagement ring is one of the most personal things you will ever buy, and it is also a purchase with many moving parts: the centre stone, the setting, the metal, the size and the design work. Two quotes can look very different simply because they do not describe the same ring. This guide shows you what a complete custom engagement ring quote should explain, so you can compare options with confidence.
Is it a setting price or a finished-ring price?
Many quotes show the setting, or mount, separately from the centre stone. A low “from” price may not include the diamond at all, or may assume a different size or quality. Before comparing, confirm that each quote describes the same finished ring: the same stone, the same metal, the same style and your size.
What a complete quote should spell out
| Item | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Centre stone | Natural or laboratory-grown; shape; carat weight; colour; clarity; cut; any grading report |
| Side or accent stones | How many, their total weight and quality |
| Metal | Platinum, white, yellow or rose gold, and the karat |
| Setting style | Prongs, bezel, halo, side stones; the height of the setting |
| Size | Your ring size, and whether resizing later is possible |
| Finish and details | Polish, engraving, any hand-finished or hidden details |
| Design process | Sketches or digital renders, and how many revisions are included |
| Timing and terms | Deposit, approval stages, delivery date, and cancellation or return terms |

Choosing the centre stone
The stone usually makes up a large share of the price. Ask whether it is natural or laboratory-grown, because the two are priced and resold very differently. A grading report from a recognised laboratory describes the stone’s characteristics and makes it easier to compare like with like. If you are bringing your own stone, for example a family diamond, it needs to be checked before a setting is designed around it.
Balancing beauty and everyday wear
An engagement ring is usually worn every day for many years. Talk about how the ring will be worn: a very high setting catches more light but also more knocks; thin bands look delicate but wear faster; a halo needs more care. Think about how it will sit next to a future wedding band, too. Reference photos help explain your style, but your ring should be designed for your stone and your hand, not copied from another designer’s work.

Approval stages protect you
- A design brief that records your choices and budget.
- A sketch or render to approve before any metal is cast.
- Confirmation of the stone before it is set.
- A final check of size, finish and stones before you collect.
Ask which items are stocked in the shop and which are ordered for you. A piece ordered from a supplier should be described as made or ordered for you, with a realistic timeframe, rather than as ready to ship.

Setting a realistic budget
There is no rule for how much an engagement ring should cost. A more useful approach is to decide on a comfortable total first, then decide where it matters most to you: a larger stone, a higher quality stone, a platinum setting or hand-finished details. A good jeweller will show you how each choice moves the price, so you can find the balance that feels right rather than stretching beyond your plans.
Questions to ask when comparing quotes
- Does this price include the centre stone, the setting and any side stones?
- Is the stone natural or laboratory-grown, and is there a grading report?
- Which metal and karat is the ring made in?
- How many design revisions are included before the ring is made?
- What deposit is needed, and when is the balance due?
- When will the ring be ready, and what happens if it is late?
- Can the ring be resized later, and by how much?
- What are the cancellation and return terms for a custom piece?
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose a natural or lab-grown diamond?
Both are real diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds cost less to buy but usually have much lower resale value. The right choice depends on your priorities and budget.
Can I use a diamond I already own?
Often yes. We check the stone’s condition and size first, then design the setting around it.
Can I return a custom ring?
Custom and made-to-order pieces are usually final sale, which is why each design stage is approved before the ring is made. See our returns policy.
