Old sterling cutlery in a drawer, silver jewellery you no longer wear, coins from a collection or a bar bought years ago: silver holds real value, and selling it should be straightforward. At Noura’s Jewellery in Alta Vista Plaza, Ottawa, a goldsmith sorts your silver by purity, weighs and tests it with professional tools, and gives you a free, clear quote based on today’s silver price. If you accept, you are paid on the spot. This guide explains what we buy, how silver is valued and how to make sure you get a fair price.

Silver we buy
We buy solid silver in almost any form, polished or tarnished, complete or broken. Tarnish does not reduce the value of the metal, so there is no need to clean anything before you visit.
Bullion coins such as Silver Maple Leafs and silver bars have their own page: see selling silver coins and selling bullion and bars.

Sterling, fine or plated? Read the marks
The most important question with silver is how much of the item is actually silver. Solid pieces are usually stamped with their purity, while silver-plated items are base metal with only a thin silver layer and have little melt value.
- 925 or Sterling means 92.5% silver, the standard for quality jewellery and flatware.
- 999 or Fine means 99.9% silver, typical of bullion bars and many modern coins.
- 800 to 835 appears on older European silver and some coins.
- EP, EPNS, Silver Plate or A1 usually mean electroplated: only a thin silver coating over another metal.
Marks can be worn, missing or misleading, so we test every piece rather than rely on the stamp alone.
How your silver offer is calculated
Like gold, silver is valued by three things: purity, weight and the market price on the day. Silver is weighed in grams or troy ounces, and only the silver counts. Knife blades, weighted candlestick bases and other non-silver parts are not paid as silver.
Here are the shop’s current silver buying rates, updated from the live market:
| Metal & purity | CAD / gram |
|---|---|
| 800 silver | 1.01 |
| Sterling silver (925) | 1.17 |
| Fine silver (999) | 1.27 |

- Free, no-obligation quotes based on today’s market price, with no hidden fees.
- Paid on the spot when you accept the offer.
- We will beat a written quote from another Ottawa buyer.
- No appointment needed during opening hours, and plenty of time to ask questions.
Tips before you sell silver
- Separate sterling from plate if you can read the marks. It saves time and avoids disappointment.
- Do not polish. Tarnish does not lower the metal value, and polishing can remove fine detail.
- Keep sets together. Bring complete cutlery sets and their boxes; some branded or designer pieces deserve a closer look.
- Check coins before selling them as scrap. Some older or collectible coins may be worth more than their silver content.
- Know the day’s price. Check our silver prices before you come in.

Frequently asked questions
Do you buy silver-plated items?
Silver plate contains very little silver, so it usually has little or no melt value. Bring it along if you are unsure and we will tell you honestly what is solid and what is plated.
Should I clean tarnished silver before selling?
No. Tarnish is only on the surface and does not change the value of the silver. Bring it as it is.
How is sterling flatware valued?
Solid sterling pieces are valued by the weight of their silver. Knives with hollow handles or steel blades contain much less silver than they weigh, so they are assessed separately.
Will you beat another buyer’s offer?
Yes. Bring a written quote from another Ottawa buyer for the same items and we will beat it.
When am I paid?
On the spot, once you accept the offer, in cash, by e-Transfer or by another method you prefer.
