How to read silver purity
Sterling silver (925) is the standard for jewellery and flatware. Fine silver (999) is used for most bullion. Silver-plated items carry only a thin layer of silver and usually have little melt value.
Troy ounces and grams
Precious metals are priced per troy ounce, which is 31.10 grams. Most kitchen and postal scales use the ordinary ounce of 28.35 grams, so be careful when weighing at home.
What moves the price of silver
- Industrial demand. Silver is used in electronics, solar panels and medicine, so economic activity affects its price.
- Investment demand. Coins, bars and funds rise and fall with investor sentiment.
- The Canadian dollar. Silver is priced in U.S. dollars worldwide, so a weaker Canadian dollar can raise the price in Canada.
- Gold. Silver often moves in the same direction as gold, but with bigger swings.
