How a gold coin is valued
For bullion coins, the value comes from the gold inside. That is why it helps to know a coin’s fine gold content, not just its total weight. A 22-karat Krugerrand weighs more than a 24-karat Maple Leaf, yet both contain exactly one troy ounce of gold.
Gold is weighed in troy ounces, about 10% heavier than the ordinary ounce used for food and parcels.

Bullion value or collector value?
Most modern gold coins are bought for their gold. Some older, rare or limited-mintage coins can be worth more to collectors than their metal. If we think a coin may have collector value, we will tell you, so you can decide how you want to sell it.
Tips before you sell gold coins
- Never clean or polish coins. Cleaning leaves fine scratches and can reduce value, especially for collectible coins.
- Keep coins in their capsules or tubes, and bring original packaging and certificates if you have them.
- Handle by the edges to avoid fingerprints.
- Know the gold content of each coin, and check today’s bullion prices before you visit.
- Compare written quotes. Bring a written quote from another Ottawa buyer and we will beat it.

Frequently asked questions
Which gold coins do you buy?
Bullion coins such as the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, South African Krugerrand and American Gold Eagle, plus other gold coins, fractional coins and rounds. Bring any coin you are unsure about.
Do you buy damaged or scratched coins?
Yes. Damaged bullion coins are still valued for their gold content.
Why is the buying price lower than the price I paid?
When you buy a coin, you pay the gold value plus a premium for minting and distribution. When you sell, the buyer pays close to the gold value. Our coins and bars guide explains this in detail.
When am I paid?
On the spot, once you accept the offer, in cash, by e-Transfer or by another method you prefer.
