Losing a stone from a ring or pendant is upsetting, but the empty setting does not have to stay empty. At Noura’s Jewellery in Alta Vista Plaza, Ottawa, we check the setting, help you choose a matching or new stone and set it securely in our own workshop. We also look at why the stone came out in the first place, so the new one stays where it belongs.
- The setting is checked and the new stone matched
- The stone is seated level in the setting
- Prongs are closed, shaped and polished
Why stones come loose
- Worn prongs. Prongs thin out over years of wear and slowly release their grip.
- A knock. A hard impact can bend a prong or crack a setting.
- Snagging. Catching a ring on clothing or hair can lift a prong.
- Earlier repairs that have weakened the setting.
If the setting is worn, it may need prong retipping before a new stone can be held safely.

Choosing the replacement stone
The right stone has to fit the setting exactly and look right beside the other stones. We consider the shape, size, colour and type of the original, as well as how the piece is worn. You can match the original as closely as possible, or use the moment to choose something new, such as a birthstone or a stone with personal meaning.
- Shape and size must match the setting precisely.
- Colour and type should sit well with the other stones.
- Hardness matters for rings worn every day; softer stones scratch and chip more easily.
- Your own stone. If you found the original, bring it; we can often reset it.
- CaratThe weight of the diamond. One carat is 0.2 grams.
- CutHow well the facets return light. It drives the sparkle.
- ColourFrom colourless (D) to light yellow or brown. Less colour is rarer.
- ClarityTiny inclusions or marks, seen under magnification.

Frequently asked questions
Can you match my missing stone exactly?
We aim for the closest match in shape, size and colour. Natural stones vary, so we show you the options before setting.
I found my stone. Can you put it back?
Often, yes, if the stone is undamaged and the setting is sound. Bring both and we will check.
How can I stop it happening again?
Have prongs checked regularly and take rings off for heavy work. Our jewellery care guide explains more.
