The small metal claws that hold your diamond are called prongs, and every day of wear rubs them down a little. Eventually a worn prong can no longer hold the stone, and that is how most diamonds are lost. Prong retipping rebuilds the worn tips with new metal before that happens. At Noura’s Jewellery in Alta Vista Plaza, Ottawa, we check your prongs under magnification and do the work in our own in-store workshop.
- A worn or bent prong no longer grips the stone
- New metal is added to rebuild the tip
- Shaped, polished and the stone checked again
Signs your prongs need attention
- The stone moves, turns or makes a faint clicking sound.
- Your ring catches on clothing, hair or knitwear.
- Prong tips look flat, thin, shiny or bent.
- You can see more of the stone’s edge than before.
- It has been several years since the setting was checked.

Retipping, rebuilding or a new head
- Retipping adds new metal to the top of a worn prong and reshapes it over the stone.
- Rebuilding replaces a whole prong that is too thin or broken.
- A new head (the part that holds the stone) may be the best choice when several prongs are badly worn.
We explain which option your ring needs and why, with the price, before any work begins. Heat-sensitive stones are protected or removed during the work when needed.

Frequently asked questions
How often should prongs be checked?
Rings worn every day benefit from a regular check. Come in sooner if a stone moves or the ring snags.
Will retipping change how my ring looks?
Well-made retipping is shaped to match the original prongs, so the ring should look as it did, with a more secure grip.
Can white gold prongs be retipped?
Yes, in most cases. We match the metal of your ring as closely as possible.
