Choosing the centre stone
Most of an engagement ring’s character comes from its centre stone. For diamonds, the four Cs explain the differences in beauty and price, and we will show you how to balance them for your budget.
- CaratThe weight of the diamond. One carat is 0.2 grams.
- CutHow well the facets return light. It drives the sparkle.
- ColourFrom colourless (D) to light yellow or brown. Less colour is rarer.
- ClarityTiny inclusions or marks, seen under magnification.
- Natural or laboratory-grown. Both are real diamonds; they differ in origin, price and resale value. We explain both honestly.
- Coloured gemstones. Sapphires and other hard gemstones are beautiful, durable alternatives.
- A family stone. A diamond from a parent’s or grandparent’s ring can be the heart of a new design, after we check its condition.
Setting, metal and everyday comfort
- Setting style. Solitaire, halo, three-stone, pavé or bezel: each changes how the stone looks and how protected it is.
- Setting height. A lower setting catches less on clothing and gloves; a higher one shows more of the stone.
- Metal. Yellow, white or rose gold, or platinum, chosen for colour, durability and skin tone.
- Wedding band. Plan how the engagement ring will sit beside a future wedding band.

Can I bring my own centre stone?
Yes. We check its condition and suitability for the setting before confirming the design.
How far ahead should I start?
As early as you can. Timing depends on the design and stone sourcing, and is confirmed with your quote. Tell us your proposal date at the first visit.
What if the ring does not fit?
Many rings can be resized in our workshop. Note that custom pieces are final sale, so please check the size carefully. See ring resizing.
