How we assess mixed valuables

• Precious metal first. Gold, silver and platinum items are tested and weighed and valued at today’s market price.
• Stones separately. Diamonds and gemstones are looked at on their own.
• Special pieces individually. Signed jewellery, fine watches and collectible coins can be worth more than their metal; we will say so when we see it.
• Honest about the rest. Plated, costume or non-precious items usually have no melt value, and we will tell you that clearly.

Tips for estates and collections

1. Do not throw anything away before it has been checked. Small, broken pieces can hold real value.
2. Do not clean or polish silver, coins or jewellery.
3. Keep documents together: receipts, appraisals, certificates and boxes.
4. Set aside heirlooms the family may want to keep, redesign or share.
5. Sell in stages if you prefer. You do not have to decide on everything in one visit.
