Smaller Gold Pieces: Weight, Premiums & a Complete Quote

Three small 200-gram gold bars stamped 999.9 fine gold

Small gold products are popular for good reasons: a tenth-ounce coin or a five-gram bar is easier to afford, makes a meaningful gift and can be sold a little at a time. But smaller pieces usually cost more for each gram of gold they contain. This guide explains why, how to compare small gold pieces fairly, and what to confirm before you buy.

What counts as fractional gold

Fractional gold simply means pieces smaller than one troy ounce. Common sizes include:

Why smaller pieces cost more per gram

Making a coin or bar has fixed costs: designing it, striking or casting it, packaging, distributing and insuring it. Those costs do not shrink in proportion to the gold. A tenth-ounce coin needs almost as much work as a one-ounce coin, yet contains a tenth of the gold. Spread over less metal, the same costs make a higher premium for each gram.

So a lower total price does not mean a lower cost per gram. A small piece can be the right choice, as long as you know what you are paying for.

How to compare two small gold products

  1. Confirm the metal and purity, for example 99.99% gold.
  2. Confirm the fine weight in grams. One tenth of a troy ounce is about 3.11 grams.
  3. Ask for the complete price, including any charges that apply.
  4. Divide the price by the grams of fine gold. That gives you the cost per gram.
  5. Compare that figure with other sizes before you decide.

When small pieces make sense

Selling small pieces later

A premium you pay when you buy is not something a future buyer is obliged to pay back. Buyers usually pay close to the metal value, less a spread. Keep small coins in their capsules and bars in their sealed cards, keep your receipts, and never clean or bend them: condition and packaging help when you sell.

Fractional coins or gram bars?

Fractional coinsGram bars
Sizes1/20 to 1/2 troy ounce1 to 20 grams and more
Premium per gramOften the highestUsually a little lower than small coins
RecognitionVery high for well-known mintsGood when sealed in the maker’s card
As a giftAttractive designs, easy to presentClean and modern, often in a gift card

Both are sound ways to own a small amount of gold. The best choice depends on whether you value design and recognition, or a slightly lower cost per gram.

Gold jewellery as a gift instead

If the gift is meant to be worn, a gold pendant, a pair of earrings or a simple bracelet can carry just as much meaning as a coin. Jewellery is priced for its design and craftsmanship as well as its gold, so it is a different kind of purchase, but it is enjoyed every day. We are happy to show you both options side by side at the shop. Browse our jewellery collection.

Storing small gold pieces

Small coins and bars are easy to misplace and easy to damage. Keep each one in its original capsule or sealed card, store them together in a small box inside a safe or another secure place, and keep a simple list of what you own with the receipts. Avoid handling coins with bare fingers: skin oils can leave marks over time.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 1/10 oz gold coin a good gift?

It is a popular one: it is real gold, easy to keep and easy to recognise. Just remember that small coins carry a higher premium per gram than larger ones.

How many grams is a quarter-ounce of gold?

A quarter of a troy ounce is about 7.78 grams of fine gold.

Will I get the premium back when I sell?

Not necessarily. Buyers usually pay close to the metal value less a spread, so the premium paid on small pieces is often not fully recovered.
