A good ring resize should be invisible: the ring fits comfortably, the stones are secure and nobody can tell where the work was done. Getting there starts with a few good questions. Here are ten questions worth asking before you approve resizing on any ring, why each one matters, and what a good answer sounds like. For the full picture of how resizing works, read our guide Before You Resize a Ring.
1. What size do I really need?
A size from a borrowed ring or a printable chart is only a starting point. Ask to be measured with professional ring sizers, ideally at a time of day when your fingers are at their normal size, and try a sizer close to the width of your band.
2. Can this particular ring be resized?
Not every ring can. Eternity bands, tension settings, some patterned bands and rings made of tungsten, titanium or ceramic need special care or another solution. A good answer is based on looking at your ring, not on a general rule.
3. How many sizes can it change safely?
Many rings can move about one or two sizes. Larger changes may need more metal, may change the shape of the band or may move the stones out of balance. Ask what the jeweller recommends for your ring.

4. Will you add or remove metal, or stretch the band?
Making a ring larger usually means adding a small piece of matching metal; smaller means removing a piece. Stretching is only suitable for small changes on plain bands, because it thins the metal. Ask which method will be used and why.
5. Will the new metal match my ring?
Any metal added should match the karat and colour of your band, so the joint does not show and the ring keeps its marked purity.
6. What happens to the stones?
Stones close to the back of the band, or heat-sensitive stones such as emeralds, opals and pearls, may need to be protected or removed during soldering. Ask whether the stones will be checked and tightened afterwards.
7. What about my engraving?
An inscription inside the band can be cut through during resizing. Point it out first and ask whether the work can be planned around it, or whether it will need to be re-engraved.
8. Will the finish change?
White gold may need fresh rhodium plating after resizing, and textured or two-tone finishes may need to be restored. Ask whether that is included in the estimate.

9. What will it cost, and how long will it take?
You should know the full estimate and an expected timeframe before work begins, including any extra work such as tightening stones or re-plating. Some resizing can be done the same day; rings with stones or special metals usually take longer.
10. Can I return the ring once it is resized?
A ring resized at your request is usually final sale. That is another reason to take a little time with step one and be confident about the size. See our shipping and returns policy.
How we answer these questions at Noura’s
At our workshop at Alta Vista Plaza, we measure your finger, look closely at your ring and answer each of these questions before we start. If resizing is not the best choice, we tell you and suggest an alternative, such as sizing beads or a ring guard. Learn more about ring resizing in Ottawa.
If your ring cannot be resized
Sometimes the honest answer is that a ring should not be resized, or not by much. That does not mean you have to stop wearing it. Depending on the ring, options include:
- Sizing beads or a sizing bar inside the band, which stop a ring spinning when the knuckle is larger than the base of the finger.
- A ring guard, a removable insert that takes up a little space.
- A new band for a ring whose shank is too worn or too thin to work with.
- A redesign that keeps the stone and creates a new ring around it. See jewellery redesign.
Measuring tips before your visit
- Measure at the end of the day, when your fingers are warm.
- Avoid measuring after exercise, in very cold weather or on a hot, humid day.
- Check on more than one day before you decide.
- Remember that wide bands feel tighter than thin ones of the same size.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to size a ring slightly bigger or smaller?
Most people prefer a ring that passes the knuckle with a gentle push and does not spin. If you are between sizes, try both with a sizer the width of your band.
Can a ring be resized more than once?
Often yes, but each resize adds a joint and wear to the band. It is best to get the size right the first time.
Can you resize a ring I bought somewhere else?
Yes. We assess rings from any jeweller, as long as the ring itself is suitable for resizing.
